He is a strong and talented Jounin (high-classed ninja) from the Konoha (Leaf) Village. When he first makes his entrance into the series, he's portrayed as a laid back person. This impression is given mainly because he arrives late to meet with his new team, Naruto Uzumaki, Sakura Haruno, and Sasuke Uchiha. Naruto's innocent joke gives all of them a poor impression of him in the beginning. How could a Jounin fall for a gag like that? As the series goes on you get to see the true colors of the man behind the mask. He highly values friendship and teamwork, which is why he had failed the other teams that came before him in the past. Naruto and his team were the only Genin he accepted because they showed him these traits.

Kakashi has this fascination for reading the infamous perverse novel entitled Icha Icha Paradise aka Come Come Paradise), which has ( mature themes in it. He's always shown reading it every so often in the series. Besides that, he also has a very odd sense of humor that even Iruka doesn't understand. There was one moment where Iruka was talking about how he was worried that Naruto and his team were still not ready for the exam. However, rather than reassuring him that they were ready he coolly makes some joke about it and angers Iruka. Kakashi is always shown as this calm and collective guy on the series. That must be why he's so popular. However, when there's a serious threat, he will not not joke around. One of Kakashi's greatest abilities is the Sharingan within his left eye. The Sharingan allows the user to read and copy the techniques of his opponents.This ability only appears in members of the Uchiha clan; however, Kakashi is not a member of it.  Kakashi's eye was surgically implanted.

Spoilage Ahead! A very brief summary of what volume 27 of the manga revealed about Kakashi's childhood. I strongly suggest reading the volume because I really can't begin to capture the angst-filled scenes it contained in words. Just highlight the space below to view the text.

Kakashi's father, Sakumo Hatake, was a strong ninja of Konoha known as the "White Fang"; however, when his father abandoned a mission in order to save his companions, he  was disgraced by the village. After being disgraced, his father committed suicide. Due to this tragedy, Kakashi became a person who valued rules and regulations over  friendship. The person in Kakashi's life who changed his way of thinking was his teammate Obito.

Obito was a member of the Uchiha clan. Because he was not punctual and kind of a screw up, Kakashi constantly mocked him. Obito and Kakashi were opposites. Obito was the enthusiastic teammate who was determined to gain acknowledgment from Kakashi. Young Kakashi was the quiet and aloof one. Rin was the female ninja of their group. Kakashi, Obito, and Rin's jounin teacher was Yondaime (4th Hokage).

When Rin was captured by ninja during a mission, Kakashi wanted to leave her behind and continue the mission while Obito wanted to turn back and save her. It was Obito's words about companionship that penetrated the ice forming around Kakashi's heart. As a result, Kakashi's decision to help Obito save Rin rather than continuing the mission marked an important turning point in his life. Just as Obito and Kakashi began to build a stronger bond of friendship, it was broken by tragedy. Though Obito used his newly developed Sharingan abilities to protect Kakashi and Rin, he was unable to save himself in the end. Obito asked Kakashi to accept his Sharingan eye as a gift. Before Obito passed away, Rin performed the operation by using medical jutsu.

Due to the fact that Sasuke reminds Kakashi of himself in the past, he is naturally shown looking out for him the most. There is a resemblance in character, between the two. Sasuke became known as a genius ninja at a very young age like his sensei. Kakashi also comes off as the cool laid back type. Although Sasuke is not depicted as being very aloof, he is often seen as the character with the cooler attitude. He trains Sasuke more than he does Sakura or Naruto. Kakashi even teaches him a technique he invented known as Chidori. He also wants to help Sasuke cope with his past.

"In the end, those who tasted revenge were not satisfied... it ended in tragedy. You'll only hurt and suffer more... even if you are successful in your revenge, all you'll be left with is emptiness." ~Kakashi
