Author’s Note: Blah blah blah… I don’t own Naruto… yadda yadda yadda… I do, however, own Kakashi! ^^ j/k! It seems that in this story Iruka owns him so if any of us want him we’ll have to fight! Anyway, enough talk, on with the story!
Chapter 2 – “So Far Behind”
we will be again another time
no matter what all the others say
‘cause i would leave it all so far behind
just to be with you today…
Iruka tossed restlessly in his bed that night. The air was hot and muggy and Iruka’s skin was soaked with sweat. Grumbling he tossed the sheet off the bed and rolled over, trying to find peace in this uneasy night, trying to escape his chaotic thoughts. Iruka opened his eyes and stared at the ceiling. He glanced at the clock on the wall and saw that it was two o’clock.
“I should be with you…” Iruka said breathlessly, thinking about his lover. But he couldn’t, not tonight, there was too much to decide. Impatiently, Iruka ran a hand through his raven hair and shut his eyes tightly. Slowly he drifted into an anxious sleep…
“Iruka-kun, my dolphin, wake up love,” a familiar voice said. Iruka opened his eyes to find himself in Kakashi’s bedroom.
“How’d I get here?” Iruka asked, noticing that the sun was rising.
“You’ve been here all night, my love,” Kakashi said, running a hand across Iruka’s unclothed back. A shiver ran up his spine, causing an excruciating yet pleasurable sensation throughout his tired body. Iruka sat up in the warm bed, yawned and then rubbed his tired eyes.
“I should’ve been gone hours ago,” Iruka said, beginning to notice that something wasn’t right. Kakashi’s room seemed unusually small and Iruka could hear a low murmur of voices outside the apartment door.
“But why love?” Kakashi said with a smile, “Everyone knows about us now.”
“What?” Iruka said loudly, searching for his pants with no avail.
“Yes, see…” Kakashi said as he got up off the bed, wearing only his boxers and for some odd reason his facemask. He walked over to his apartment door and pulled it open. Iruka gasped in horror at the sight outside of the door. Hundreds of his comrades, peers, elders, even his students were outside the door whispering to each other. The room suddenly became as black as night and all Iruka could see was their condemning eyes and their cruel whispers thundered through the awful silence.
“N-no!” Iruka yelled out, “It’s not what it looks like!”
“It’s not?” Kakashi said emotionlessly, “Don’t you love me?” Iruka looked with anguish into his lover’s eyes and then quickly back at the gaping crowd…
Iruka sat up quickly in his bed. He was soaked with sweat, as was his bed. He ran a hand through his sweat drenched hair and brushed it out of his eyes. He looked at his clock again and realized he’d only been asleep for ten minutes.
“What an awful dream,” Iruka said as he got up and pulled on some clothes, “I can’t even escape my scarecrow’s torturous intent in my dreams…” Iruka gathered his hair up into its usual bunch atop his head and tied on his leaf head protector. He opened the large French doors and stepped out onto the balcony. A cool breeze blew across Iruka’s hot skin and he felt a much needed relief from the heat. Closing his eyes to concentrate better, Iruka gather chakra in his feet and made a brilliant leap to the rooftop of his apartment complex. It was one of the highest buildings in the Konoha village and the view from the top was spectacular. Showing his expert ninja stealth, Iruka landed gently without a sound. Quietly so as to not wake anyone he seated himself on the tin roof and then tenderly leaned back and lay down.
The moon was high in the cloudless heavens and every star could be seen shining intensely. The cool breeze once again brushed across Iruka’s face and he gently closed his eyes, listening to the sounds of the night. He lay there like that for quite some time and began to drift off to sleep, when he sensed something above him. Opening his eyes quickly Iruka was shocked to find himself face to face with his familiar silver-haired, masked comrade.
“It’s about time you woke up,” Kakashi said gently, grinning at Iruka through his mask.
“How long have you been there?” Iruka asked, blushing furiously.
“Oh, only about fifteen minutes,” Kakashi casually conversed, “Was your swim with the stars enjoyable my dolphin?”
“I couldn’t sleep,” Iruka said as he sat up beside Kakashi, “You haunted my dreams.”
“Ahh…” Kakashi said as the wind blew his silver hair, “How so?” Iruka sighed and looked out over the village.
“We were at your place…” Iruka began, “And I was about to leave, but you opened the door. Everyone was out there, and they saw us, half-naked… I was mortified.”
“I see…” Kakashi whispered.
“But that’s not all,” Iruka stated, “I tried to deny it, and you asked if I loved you…” Iruka stopped to think about his reaction.
“Go on,” the silver-haired man said gently.
“I looked into your eyes,” Iruka said slowly, “And suddenly, I didn’t care what they thought anymore. We’ve been through so much together, and I truly do care about you a lot. You’re the one I want to be with.” Kakashi’s eye brightened and he turned to Iruka.
“So what you’re saying is…” Kakashi began but was interrupted.
“Is that I love you my beautiful scarecrow.” Iruka whispered. Kakashi smiled and pulled down his facemask. He leaned in gently placing a hand on Iruka’s neck as their lips brushed lightly. Iruka then in turn wrapped his arms around Kakashi and held him tightly as their shy nuzzle became a deep passionate kiss. Kakashi pulled away and ran his hand down his raven-haired lover’s arm. He leaned in and embraced Iruka in a gentle cuddle as the two lay on the roof. They sat there, a long satisfied silence between them, for hours until the sun began to lighten the sky.
“Love?” Kakashi asked suddenly, “What about today? What’re you going to do?” Iruka sat up and pulled Kakashi up with him.
“What do you mean?” Iruka asked innocently though he already knew.
“You know what I mean,” Kakashi said in a serious tone, “Is this going to be a long-term, open relationship or are you going to clam up and not tell anyone?” Iruka looked down at the rusting tin roof and smiled.
“I don’t think I’m worried about it anymore. I don’t care what they think, I won’t care if they kick me out of the village for it either,” Iruka said boldly. Kakashi laughed lightly and Iruka gave him an annoyed look.
“Only you…” Kakashi laughed, “You know they won’t kick you out for loving me!” Iruka smiled, the scar across his nose wrinkling a bit.
“I know,” Iruka said, “But it makes me feel great to think I’d give it up to be with you.”
“Hmm?” Kakashi asked.
“You see all of that?” Iruka said motioning to the great city that was the Konoha village, “I’d leave all of this, all these people, all these memories, just to be with you.” Kakashi smiled and pulled on his facemask.
“We’d better go,” Kakashi said as he stood, “Let’s meet for lunch.”
“See you then,” Iruka said as he grinned brightly.
“I can’t wait to see what the day will bring!” Kakashi said brightly as he leapt off of the building and onto another. Though he had said those words with much happiness, his heart was filled with dread at the thought. He loved Iruka so much, but would his beautiful dolphin really be able to give up so much just to be with him? Only time will tell…
