Why KakaIru:
Although there does not appear to be any hardcore evidence supporting them as a couple, the fact that there is not a female character that seems to share any form of a relationship with either of them makes this pairing fair game. Then again, even if there is a female, we yaoi/shounen ai fans always seem to find a way to break through the "hetro-barrier." After all, you only need two guys with great personalities to form a promising slashable pairing. Sometimes evidence does not need to be presented. The Kakashi and Iruka pairing is a good example of this. The anime and manga does not really hint at them being a couple. It is also very rare that the two ever cross paths on the series. It may be the charm of these two that draws people to make a connection between them.
Iruka-sensei is just an awesome character and in my opinion a difficult character to actually hate. He is caring and protective of his students. He may have a degree of seriousness but he still has sensitivity. Though he tends to react to things easily; but, the fact that he shows his emotions does not make him the weak character on the series. Iruka is very reliable and trustworthy. It's not at all surprising that the 3rd Hokage puts a great deal of trust in him. Kakashi-sensei on the other hand is the mysterious character of the series. He is tardy, a bit of a pervert, but serious when the time calls for it. He also seems to enjoy getting a rise out of people. Since he likes to mess with people, he probably would have a good time bothering someone like Iruka. Unlike Iruka who wears his emotions on his sleeve, Kakashi tends to hide his emotions behind a mask--quite literally. It is hard to tell what is really on Kakashi's mind because he usually has an unreadable expression. While there are noted differences between the two, there are a few similarities.
Both Iruka and Kakashi have troubled pasts and value their positions as teachers. Iruka loves his students and always wants to look out for their well-being. He could be a disciplinary when he wants to be; yet, he is not overly strict. Kakashi cares about his students but also wants to teach them to learn valuable lessons that he feels would be essential to their survival as ninja.
Other Reasons for the KakaIru Appeal:
The Adult Equivalent of SasuNaru?
Some fans supporting KakaIru love find some chemistry between the two and by seeing them as the adult equivalents to the infamous SasuNaru (Sasuke x Naruto) pairing. Iruka-sensei was a prankster (thought I'm sure to say that Naruto has definitely out-ranked him in this category)when he was younger while Kakashi achieves the title of a genius ninja at a very young age with an aloof pompous personality (Sasuke's arrogance has definitely out-ranked Kakashi's). Anyways, a prankster ninja usually refers to "Naruto" just as a young genius ninja with a cool exterior refers to "Sasuke." Given this terminology, maybe this approach is not very far-fetched. Iruka has said once that Naruto reminded him of himself just as Kakashi has commented on Sasuke in a similar way. As result, it would make sense that Iruka naturally shows more concern for Naruto while Kakashi looks out for Sasuke. They each understand their students pain the best because they have experienced similar situations.
It's Not Canon
Sometimes fans who are tired of the canon pairings of certain series tend to embrace the pairings that would be considered unusual. After all, the age where a person needed to find underlining evidence to form a support base for a pairing is fading. Fandom communities for non-canon pairings are steadily growing and the KakaIru pairing is just one of many in this category. There's a strong support wave by an increasing number of fans saying, "Yeah! There's canon but, how about a little variety?" With this attitude in mind, the lack of canon evidence supporting the Kakashi and Iruka pairing does not seem to become a complete handicap. In some ways, this could be part of what keeps it going.
